Women in Hinduism
لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّٰهُ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ ٱللَّٰهِ
Starting with the name of Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala) The Most Merciful, the Entirely Merciful!
Hindus rant about status of women in Islam, but what does their religion say? Let’s find out!
1 Definition of a Woman
Mahabharat 13 Section XL says;
…There is no creature more sinful, O son, than women. Woman is a blazing
fire. She is the illusion, O king, that the Daitya
Maya created. She is the sharp edge of the razor. She is poison. She is a
snake. She is fire. She is, verily, all these united together….
It also says;
…Those, however, that sprang from this creation by Brahman with the aid
of an illusion became sinful. The grandsire bestowed upon them the desire of
enjoyment, all kinds of carnal pleasure. Tempted by the desire of enjoyment,
they began to pursue persons of the other sex. The puissant lord of the
deities created Wrath as the companion of Lust. Persons of the male sex,
yielding to the power of Lust and Wrath, sought the companionship of women.
Women have no especial acts prescribed for them. Even this is the ordinance
that was laid down. The Sruti declares that women are endued with senses the most powerful, that they
have no scriptures to follow, and that they are living lies…
Srimad Bhagvatam 2.10.26;
निरभिद्यत शिश्नो वै प्रजानन्दामृतार्थिन: ।
उपस्थ आसीत् कामानां प्रियं तदुभयाश्रयम् ॥ २६ ॥
nirabhidyata
śiśno vai
prajānandāmṛtārthinaḥ
upastha āsīt kāmānāṁ
priyaṁ tad-ubhayāśrayam
Translation: Thereupon, for sexual pleasure, begetting
offspring and tasting heavenly nectar, the Lord developed the genitals, and
thus there is the genital organ and its controlling deity, the Prajāpati. The
object of sexual pleasure and the controlling deity are under the control of
the genitals of the Lord.
Swami Prabhupada does the commentary
of the aforementioned verse;
The
heavenly pleasure for the conditioned soul is sexual pleasure, and this
pleasure is tasted by the genitals. The woman is the object of sexual
pleasure, and both the sense perception of sexual pleasure and the woman are
controlled by the Prajāpati, who is under the control of the Lord's genitals.
The impersonalist must know from this verse that the Lord is not impersonal,
for He has His genitals, on which all the pleasurable objects of sex depend.
In Siva Purana Section 5
Uma Samhita Chapter 24 Nature of Women Verses 15-35;
“O
Nārada, this is the defect in women. Even women of noble families, women with
husbands and women endowed with beauty do not stand within the limits of
decency. There is none more sinning and more sinful than women. Women are at
the root of all sins. This you know already. They might have husbands of
good knowledge, of ample wealth, of great comeliness and pleasing to them. But
when they get opportunities for erring, they do not wait. O holy lord, this
is the evil practice of all of us, women, that we resort to sinful men casting
off all shame and shyness. Women love only those persons who solicit their
company, who approach them intimately and who render them a little bit of
service. Women usually do not observe the limitations
of conventional decency. If at all they stand by them with their
husbands it is because no man makes advances to them or because they are afraid
of their husbands. There is no man not worthy of honour to women. They are not
mindful of the age of the man. They carry on their dalliances with any man ugly
or beautiful. It is not
due to fear, taunts or affection for their husbands or regard for their lineage
that women remain loyal to their husbands. Even women of noble families aspire
for the life of lascivious women who in their prime of youth adorned with
lovable ornaments and beautiful wearing garments move about frivolously. Even
the women who are honoured well, loved intimately and looked after with care
become attached to hunchbacks, blind men, imbeciles and dwarfs. O celestial
sage, they become attached to lame and even despicable persons. O great sage,
there is none in the world who cannot be approached by women with solicitations
of lust. O brahmin, if women do not get men for their dalliance, they begin to
indulge in abnormal sexual activity with one another. They do not stand by
their husbands. Women become desperate when they do not get men, when they are
afraid of servants, when they are frightened of being killed or imprisoned.
Because they indulge in sexual intercourse as they please they are
fickle-minded, of evil deeds and emotionally incomprehensible even to an
intelligent man. Fire is not satiated with the logs of wood it consumes; the
ocean is not satiated with the rivers that flow into it. The god of death is
not satiated with the living beings he kills and women are not satiated with
the number of men they cohabit with. O excellent sage, there is another secret
of all women that immediately on seeing a man their vaginal passage begins to
exude slimy secretions. On seeing a man fresh and clean from his bath with his
body perfumed with sweet scents, the vaginal passage of women begins to exude
like water dripping from a leather bag. Women do not brook their husbands who
may give all that they love, who may honour and console them and who may look
after them well. Women do not remain satisfied and contented so much with
simple loves and pleasures and with ornaments and money as with illicit love
pursued by them with other men. Women can be kept equally balanced against
all these put together viz., god of death, Yama, Antaka, Pātāla, the
submarine fire, the sharp edge of razor, poison, serpent and fire. Ever since
the five elements, the world, the men and women were created by Brahmā, O Nārada,
the defect lies in women always.”
It is mentioned in Srimad Bhagavatam 9.14.36;
urvaśy uvāca
striyo hy akaruṇāḥ krūrā
ghnanty alpārthe ’pi viśrabdhaṁ
vidhāyālīka-viśrambham
Translation: Urvaśī said:
My dear King, you are a man, a hero. Don’t be impatient and give up your life.
Be sober and don’t allow the senses to overcome you like foxes. Don’t let
the foxes eat you. In other words, you should not be controlled by your senses.
Rather, you should know that the heart of a woman is like that of a fox. There
is no use making friendship with women. Women as a class are
merciless and cunning. They
cannot tolerate even a slight offense. For their own pleasure they can do
anything irreligious, and therefore they do not fear killing even a faithful
husband or brother. Women are very easily
seduced by men. Therefore, polluted women
give up the friendship of a man who is their well-wisher and establish false
friendship among fools. Indeed, they seek newer and newer friends, one after
another.
Swami
Prabhupada
says in the commentary of the aforementioned verses;
Because women are easily seduced, the Manu-saṁhitā enjoins
that they should not be given freedom. A woman must always be protected, either
by her father, by her husband, or by her elderly son. If women are given
freedom to mingle with men like equals, which they now claim to be, they cannot
keep their propriety. The nature of a woman, as personally described by Urvaśī, is to
establish false friendship with someone and then seek new male companions, one
after another, even if this means giving up the company of a sincere
well-wisher.
Bhagavad Gita 9.32;

Translation: O son of Pṛthā, those who take shelter in Me, though
they be of lower birth – women, vaiśyas [merchants] and śūdras [workers] –
can attain the supreme destination.
Srimad Bhagvatam 2.7.46;

Translation: Surrendered souls, even from
groups leading sinful lives, such as women, the labourer class, the
mountaineers and the Siberians, or even the birds and beasts, can also know
about the science of Godhead and become liberated from the clutches of the
illusory energy by surrendering unto the pure devotees of the Lord and by
following in their footsteps in devotional service.

women, śūdras and cowherd men, the birds, the lower animals and the sinful
living entities, can revive his original, eternal spiritual life and exist
forever simply by accepting the principles of bhakti-yoga.
Devi Bhagavatam 1.5.83;
“Falsehood, vain boldness, craftiness, stupidity, impatience,
over-greediness, impurity, and harshness are the natural qualities of women.”
Manusmriti 3.239

Translation: The Cāṇdāla, the pig, the cock, as also the
dog, the unclean woman and the eunuch should not look at the Brāhmaṇas while
eating.
2 Beating Women
Claiming
that Islam teaches to beat the women, I wonder what response will the Hindus
have to the following;
Garuda
Purana Section CIX Verse 31;
“Rogues, artisans, servants, badmen, drums, and women,
are softened and set right by beating.”
Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 6.4.6-7;

Translation: If man sees his reflection
in water, he ṣhould recite the following Mantra: ‘(May the gods grant) me
lustre, manhood, reputation, wealth and merits.’ She (his wife) is indeed the
goddess of beauty among women. Therefore, he should approach this handsome
woman and speak to her. If she is not willing, he
should buy her over; and if she is still unyielding, he should strike her with
a stick or with the hand and proceed, uttering the following Mantra, ‘I take
away your reputation,’ etc. She is then actually discredited.
Manu Smriti 8.299;
भार्या पुत्रश्च दासश्च प्रेष्यो भ्रात्रा च सौदरः ।

Translation: The wife, the son, the slave, the servant and
the uterine brother shall be beaten with a rope or a split bamboo, when they
have committed a fault.
Yama (Vivādaratnākara,
p. 2.);
‘Wife, son,
slave, slave-girl and pupil, when these commit a fault,
they should be chastised with a rope or with split bamboo; but in the lower,
never in the higher, parts of the body: —if one strikes them otherwise, he
should be punished.’

3 Un-Intellectual and her Testimony
Hindus: Islam teaches
women are devoid of intellect.
Meanwhile Hindu scriptures;
Srimad Bhagvatam 6.17:34-45;

सर्वत्र समदृक् शान्तो ह्यहं चैवाच्युतप्रिय: ॥ ३४ ॥

Translation: This magnanimous Citraketu is a dear devotee
of the Lord. He is equal to all living entities and is free from attachment and
hatred. Similarly, I am also very dear to Lord Nārāyaṇa. Therefore, no one
should be astonished to see the activities of the most exalted devotees of
Nārāyaṇa, for they are free from attachment and envy. They are always peaceful,
and they are equal to everyone.
Swami Prabhupada says in commentary of the
aforementioned verses;
Here is a difference between male
and female that exists even in the higher statuses of life — in fact, even
between Lord Śiva and his wife. Lord Śiva could understand Citraketu very
nicely, but Pārvatī could not. Thus, even in the higher statuses of life there
is a difference between the understanding of a male and that of a female. It
may be clearly said that the understanding of a woman is always inferior to the
understanding of a man. In the Western countries there is now agitation to the
effect that man and woman should be considered equal, but from this verse it
appears that woman is always less intelligent than man.
Rigveda 8.33.17;
इन्द्र॑श्चिद्घा॒ तद॑ब्रवीत्स्त्रि॒या अ॑शा॒स्यं मन॑: । उ॒तो अह॒ क्रतुं॑ र॒घुम् ॥

Translation: “Verily Indra said that the mind of a woman is not to

Translation: For women there is no dealing with the sacred
texts; such is the rule of law; the fact is that, being destitute of organs and
devoid of sacred texts, women are ‘false’.
Baudhāyana (1.11.7): ‘Women are considered to have no business
with the sacred texts.’
Śukranīti (4.4.9-10): ‘The woman and the Śūdra shall never
recite mantras.’
With regards to women
being presented as witnesses;
Manusmriti 8:77;

A single man, free from covetousness, may be
a witness, but not many women, even though pure, —because the understanding of
women is not steady,
—nor other men who are tainted with defects.

4 No Freedom
Hindus
cry that Islam does not give freedom to women. Hinduism does not agree with
their argument. You never throw a rock when your own house is made of glass.
Manusmriti 5:147;

Translation: She should not seek separation from her
father, husband or sons: by separating, the woman would render both families
disreputable.
Manusmriti 5:148;

Translation: She should be always cheerful and alert in household-work; she should have the utensils well-cleaned and in spending she should be close-fisted.
Mahabharat Section XX verse 20 says:

Manusmriti 9.96;

Translation: Women were created for the purpose of
child-bearing, and men for the furfose of procreation. hence it is that
Religious Rites have been ordained in the Veda as common between the man and
his wife.
It
is mentioned in Skanda Purana Section 103 Verse 103.9-16;
“…It is cited by expounders of the Vedas that a woman is one who gives sexual pleasure and a son…”
Narada
Smriti 12.19:
Women have been created for the sake of propagation, the wife being the field,
and the husband the giver of the seed. The field must be given to him who has
seed. He who has no seed in unworthy to possess the field.

6 Women’s menses makes her impure
Hindus
claim that Islam does not allow women to pray when she is menstruating, but do
they even read their own scriptures?
Vishnu
Smriti 5:105;
“If a woman in her courses (touches such a person), she
shall be lashed with a whip.”
Brahma Purana 113.140-147;
A person who is conversant
with righteousness becomes purified by taking a bath if he touches these: a
mendicant who is not worthy of being fed, a heretic, a cat, an ass, a cook, a
fallen man, an outcaste (a person ostracised), a Caṇḍāla and those who bear
dead bodies, a country pig and a woman in her monthly course. Similarly,
one has to take bath for purification if one touches any one of these:
persons defiled by a woman who has given birth to a child or a person who has
the pollution due to child birth or a person who fails to perform his daily
round of duties at home or he who is abandoned by brahmins or the meanest man
who commits sins by his (indiscriminate) eating.
Manusmriti 4:208;
भ्रूणघ्नावेक्षितं चैव संस्पृष्टं चाप्युदक्यया ।
पतत्रिणावलीढं च शुना संस्पृष्टमेव च ॥ २०८ ॥

Translation: Nor that which has been looked at by the
Brāhmaṇa-slayer, or what has been toughed by a woman in her courses, or what
has been pecked by the birds, or what has been touched by a dog.
Gautama (17.10-11); ‘Touched by the woman in the courses or by
the feet of birds; —seen by an abortionist, or smelt by the cow, or defiled in
thought.’
Āpastamba (1.19.1); ‘One who is intoxicated or insane or
imprisoned, the paramour living in the house of his ladylove, or one who
permits his wife’s paramour to live in the house— (the food of these should he
avoided).’

7 Rape
It is mentioned in Shiva Purana Section 2.5 - Rudra-saṃhitā (5): Yuddha-khaṇḍa Verses 38-45 where Shiva raped the Vranda;
38. On seeing her husband, Vṛndā too was delighted. She forgot her
sorrow. She considered everything a dream.
39. Delighted in the heart and with all the dormant passions kindled up,
she sported with him for many days in the middle of that forest.
40. Once at the end of the sexual intercourse she realised that it was
Viṣṇu. Vṛndā rebuked him angrily and spoke thus.
41. Fie on this misdeed of Viṣṇu in outraging the modesty of another
man’s wife. I have now realised you as the wielder of illusion, appearing in
the guise of an ascetic.
42. O Vyāsa, saying thus in great anger she showed
her brilliant powers as a staunch chaste lady by cursing Viṣṇu.
43. “O base foe of the Daityas, defiler of other people’s virtue, O
wicked one, take this curse from me, greater in force than all persons.
44. The two persons whom you made to appear in front of me shall
become Rākṣasas[1] and abduct your wife.
45. You will be distressed on account of separation from your wife
roaming about with Śeṣa ‘lord of snakes’[2] who
posed as your disciple here. You will seek the help of monkeys[3] in
the forest.
46. After saying this, Vṛndā entered fire though prevented by Viṣṇu who
was fascinated by her charms.
On the commentary of Srimad Bhagvatam 4.24.5
Swami Prabhupada says on Indra raping other women;
It
is understood from various scriptures and purāṇas that the King of heaven,
Indra, was very expert in stealing and kidnapping. He could steal anything
without being visible to the proprietor, and he could kidnap anyone's wife
without being detected. Once he raped the wife of Gautama Muni by using his disappearing
art, and similarly by becoming invisible he stole the horse of Mahārāja Pṛthu.
Although in human society such activities are considered abominable, the
demigod Indra was not considered to be degraded by them. Although Antardhāna
could understand that King Indra was stealing the horse from his father, he did
not kill Indra, for he knew that if one who is very powerful sometimes commits
an abominable act, it should be disregarded. In Bhagavad-gītā (BG 9.30) it is
clearly stated: Thus the Lord says that even if a devotee commits an
abominable act, he should be considered a sādhu, or a pious man, because of his
unflinching devotion to the Lord. The devotees of the Lord never willingly
commit any sinful act, but sometimes they commit something abominable due to
their previous habits. Such acts should not be taken very seriously,
however, because the devotees of the Lord are very powerful, whether they are
on the heavenly planets or on this planet. If by chance they commit
something abominable, it should not be taken into account, but should be
overlooked.
Swami Prabhupada writes commentary on Srimad
Bhagvatam 3.22.15;
There are different kinds of marriages, of which the
first-class marriage is held by inviting a suitable bridegroom for the daughter
and giving her in charity, well dressed and well decorated with ornaments,
along with a dowry according to the means of the father. There are other
kinds of marriage, such as gāndharva marriage and marriage by love, which are
also accepted as marriage. Even if one is forcibly kidnapped and later on
accepted as a wife, that is also accepted. But Kardama Muni accepted the
first-class way of marriage because the father was willing and the daughter was
qualified. She had never offered her heart to anyone else. All these
considerations made Kardama Muni agree to accept the daughter of Svāyambhuva
Manu.
Swami Prabhupada writes
commentary on Srimad Bhagvatam 4.25.41;
Manu-saṁhitā recommends that to
keep a wife satisfied a husband should give her some ornaments because women
are generally fond of home, ornaments, dresses, children, etc. In this way the
woman is the center of all material enjoyment. In this regard, the word vikhyātam
is very significant. A man is always famous for his aggression toward a
beautiful woman, and such aggression is sometimes considered rape. Although
rape is not legally allowed, it is a fact that a woman likes a man who is very
expert at rape.
Swami Prabhupada again writes on Srimad
Bhagvatam 4.26.26;
Both man and woman desire one
another; that is the basic principle of material existence. Women in general
always keep themselves beautiful so that they can be attractive to their lusty
husbands. When a lusty husband comes before his wife, the wife takes advantage
of his aggressive activities and enjoys life. Generally when a woman is
attacked by a man-whether her husband or some other man—she enjoys the attack,
being too lusty. In other words, when one's intelligence is properly utilized,
both the intellect and the intelligent person enjoy one another with great
satisfaction. As stated in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (SB 7.9.45):
yan maithunādi-gṛhamedhi-sukhaṁ hi tucchaṁ kaṇḍūyanena karayor iva duḥkha-duḥkham
The actual happiness of the karmīs is sex life. They work very hard outside
the home, and to satiate their hard labor, they come home to enjoy sex life.
King Purañjana went to the forest to hunt, and after his hard labor he returned
home to enjoy sex life. If a man lives outside the home and spends a week in a city
or somewhere else, at the end of the week he becomes very anxious to return
home and enjoy sex with his wife.
This is confirmed in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam: yan maithunādi-gṛhamedhi-sukhaṁ hi
tuccham (SB 7.9.45). Karmīs work very hard simply to enjoy sex. Modern human
society has improved the materialistic way of life simply by inducing
unrestricted sex life in many different ways. This is most prominently visible
in the Western world.
The only question arises, which
woman enjoys rape?
